Holiday Hosting? Make Sure Your Drinking Water Is Ready for the Extra Guests

|

By the time the holidays roll around in Southwest Florida, most of us have our routines down. The guest room is aired out, the menu is planned, and the extra towels are folded. What usually does not make the checklist is the one thing every guest uses all day long: the drinking water and plumbing that keep your home running smoothly.

We have seen it over three generations of plumbing and water quality work in this area. A house that feels fine for a couple suddenly shows its weak spots when it is hosting a full crowd. At Waterbird Home Solutions, we care about that gap between “good enough for every day” and “reliable, comfortable, and healthy” when your whole family is under one roof.

With a health-first focus and deep roots in Lee County, we look at your water through the lens of how it actually feels to live with it, not just whether it passes basic standards. Holiday hosting just happens to be when those small issues show up the loudest.

Why Your Water Feels Different When a Full House Arrives

The way your water behaves on a quiet Tuesday is not the way it behaves when the driveway is full and every bedroom is taken. During the holidays, you have more people showering back to back, more handwashing, more dishwashing cycles, more laundry, and a refrigerator that is constantly making ice. All that demand pulls from the same supply lines at once, so any small pressure or taste issue gets magnified.

Bonita Springs Utilities reports local water hardness at about 80 to 100 mg/L, or five to six grains per gallon. That falls in the “moderately hard” range. In real life, that hardness shows up as mineral-related spotting on holiday glassware, cloudy cubes in your guests’ drinks, and a slightly different mouthfeel in coffee or tea. It is not a sign something is wrong, it is simply the mineral content that is normal for this area.

BSU also uses monochloramine for disinfection, which is a chlorine-ammonia compound rather than standard free chlorine. Monochloramine behaves a little differently in taste and filtration. You might barely notice it because you are used to it. But a guest flying in from a different city water system may pick up on a faint “pool” taste or smell in coffee, tea, or ice water, even when the water is within all health standards.

When your water is already working hard to keep up with a full house, those minerals and disinfectants are more obvious. The good news is that there are straightforward ways to dial in the comfort level before anyone arrives.

Start With the Kitchen: Drinking Water & Ice Quality

The kitchen is where holiday hosting lives or dies. If the coffee tastes off, the ice looks cloudy, or there is a lingering aftertaste in drinking water, guests notice it quickly, even if they never say a word. In Bonita Springs, that comes down to a mix of natural minerals and monochloramine from the treatment process.

Water hardness comes from calcium and magnesium minerals dissolved in the water. Those minerals, combined with monochloramine disinfectant, can subtly change the flavor profile of coffee, tea, soups, and baked goods. You might not think twice about it during the week, but when you are serving special meals and drinks for guests, you are more tuned in to the details.

A simple, high-flow point-of-use filtration setup at the kitchen sink goes a long way. By filtering right where you fill pots, make coffee, or draw a glass of water, you reduce total dissolved solids, remove disinfectant taste, and keep flavors clean without affecting pressure to the rest of the home.

Cloudy ice is another common holiday frustration. In our area, that cloudiness usually comes from dissolved minerals and trapped air, not a safety problem. Still, it does not look great in clear holiday glassware. Feeding your refrigerator ice maker and cold-water dispenser from a dedicated under-sink filter helps you serve clear, fresh-tasting ice without changing how you use the fridge.

Many people think traditional reverse osmosis, often called an RO system, is the only path to very clean drinking water. Standard RO can produce great water, but it can also lower water pressure at the tap and send a surprising amount of wastewater down a drain line. That trade-off is not ideal when you are hosting and need both good water and strong flow at the sink.

That is where our Aqua Nest high-flow filtration systems come in. They are designed to deliver excellent, great-tasting filtered water at full pressure at the kitchen tap, feeding cooking, coffee, and ice, without the wastewater line that a traditional reverse osmosis system requires. For busy holiday kitchens, that balance of quality, pressure, and convenience makes a real difference.

Check Your Water Heater Before the First Guest Showers

Few things derail a holiday morning faster than a lukewarm shower for the last person in line. In Bonita Springs, our water heaters have to deal with the same moderate hardness and natural minerals that show up on your dishes, and that mineral content slowly settles inside the tank over time.

BSU notes that white or tan round particles in hot water are often pieces of mineral buildup breaking loose from the inside of a water heater. When that sediment builds up, the heater has to work harder to bring the tank up to temperature, which means slower recovery between back-to-back showers. The first couple of guests may have perfectly hot water, while the next ones get a surprise.

Because of this, BSU recommends flushing hot water heaters at least once a year. For many families, the pre-holiday season is a natural reminder to do that maintenance. Flushing helps remove sediment, improves heating efficiency, and supports more consistent hot water when your schedule is packed.

We work on both traditional tank water heaters and tankless units throughout Lee County. As part of a pre-hosting visit, we can inspect your heater, check its recovery performance, and flush out sediment if needed. Catching those issues before guests arrive is much easier than troubleshooting in the middle of a busy weekend when every bathroom is in use.

Run Your Guest Bathroom Before Anyone Checks In

In many Bonita Springs homes, the guest bathroom sits quiet most of the year. Warm, humid air and infrequent use are not a great combination for plumbing. Lines can get stale, small amounts of biological buildup can collect in traps, and mineral deposits slowly narrow showerhead openings and aerators.

A few days before guests arrive, run every fixture in the guest bathroom for several minutes. Turn on the sink faucet, open the shower, and flush the toilet a few times. This pulls fresh water through the lines, refills traps, and gives you time to notice anything unusual like odor, discoloration that does not clear, or slow draining.

If the sink or tub faucet has a weak or uneven stream, the most common cause is not a major plumbing problem. It is often simple aerator mineral buildup, where hardness deposits clog the tiny mesh screen at the tip of the faucet. Unscrewing the aerator, cleaning out the scale, and reinstalling it usually restores normal flow in a matter of minutes.

Pay attention to smell while you run the fixtures. A mild, short-lived odor from a long-unused drain can be normal as stale air gets pushed out. But if you notice a persistent sewer smell, very low pressure across multiple fixtures, or discolored water that does not clear after a few minutes, that is a signal something deeper is going on. In that case, it is wise to bring in a plumber before the holiday rush instead of trying to work around it once guests are already unpacked.

Consider Whole-Home Softening or Filtration for Long-Term Comfort

If you host often, or if you are just ready for your home to feel more comfortable every day, it may be time to think beyond temporary fixes. Moderately hard water at 80 to 100 mg/L is manageable, but it still leaves its mark in the form of scale inside pipes, spotting on dishes, and extra wear on water-using appliances.

A whole-home water softener treats water as it enters the house, neutralizing the calcium and magnesium that cause water hardness. Over time, that helps reduce the mineral film on shower doors, spots on glasses and plates, stiffness in towels and laundry, and scale buildup in your water heater and other equipment. For frequent hosts, it is a way to make the entire home feel softer and look cleaner, not just the kitchen tap.

Some homes may benefit more from whole-home water filtration. A whole-home filtration setup can address broader concerns, such as sediment, certain tastes or odors, or specific water quality characteristics linked to your plumbing. Each property in Lee County is a little different, so the first step is always to find out what your water is actually doing.

That is why we offer free water testing. During a visit, we check your hardness levels, look at disinfectant behavior, and consider any issues your fixtures or pipes may be contributing. Then we explain what we see in plain English, with clear options and no pressure to buy parts you do not need. Sometimes the right answer is a small adjustment at the kitchen sink. Other times, a softener, a high-flow drinking water filter, or a combination of solutions makes the most sense for long-term comfort.

With more than 45 years of family plumbing and water quality experience behind us, we have learned that honest testing and upfront, flat-rate pricing give homeowners the confidence they need to move forward. We also stand behind our workmanship with a satisfaction guarantee, so if something is not right, we come back and make it right.
